A park home’s compact layout and existing electric or LPG heating can make air-to-air heat pumps attractive. One installation provides responsive winter heat, summer cooling and dehumidification—but only after the survey proves capacity, airflow, structure, utilities and site consent.
Park homes are not small masonry houses
Heat loss depends on construction age, insulation, glazing, air leakage, floor exposure and wind. Lightweight walls can warm quickly but may also cool quickly when the system stops. A rule of thumb based only on floor area can miss exposed floors, older fabric and large glazing.
The installer should calculate the winter load for each bedroom and living zone, then check summer solar gain. An open-plan lounge and kitchen may suit one head; closed bedrooms usually need their own indoor unit or a retained heater. A single large lounge unit should not be described as whole-home heating unless distribution is proven.
Residential park home, lodge or holiday use
Occupancy and tenure change the brief. A permanent residential park home needs dependable winter performance and a plan for every occupied room. A holiday lodge may prioritise rapid warm-up, frost protection and remote controls, but site rules or seasonal closure can affect use. The quote should state which occupancy pattern and design temperature it assumes.
Grant, planning and consumer arrangements may also depend on the property and ownership. Do not assume a system qualifies because the unit is technically a heat pump; ask an MCS installer to confirm the exact property route in writing.

Against direct electric heating, a heat pump’s seasonal COP gives the clearest efficiency case. Against LPG, compare delivered fuel cost, appliance efficiency, standing or delivery charges and which rooms are heated. Use current bills rather than a generic national saving claim.
A hybrid design can retain LPG or direct electric for hot water, backup or a distant bedroom while air-to-air serves the main occupied zone. That can be practical even when it is not a full-heating grant design.
Installed cost and access
A straightforward single-room system commonly costs about £1,400–£3,200 installed. A two-room multi-split often budgets around £3,000–£5,500. Premium quiet units, long pipe routes, condensate pumps, difficult vehicle access, electrical upgrades, bespoke bases and structural work increase the price.
The quotation should include travel and site access, parking or working-hour restrictions, equipment delivery, waste removal and making good. If the park has approved contractors or requires method statements and insurance evidence, obtain those requirements before comparing final prices.
Outdoor-unit base, vibration and airflow
The condenser should not be attached casually to lightweight cladding. The installer needs to understand the wall build-up or provide an appropriate independent base. Anti-vibration support, flexible connections and separation from bedrooms help prevent structure-borne hum.
Do not hide the unit inside tight skirting, a decorative box or under an enclosed deck. It needs manufacturer clearances and free airflow in heating and cooling. Recirculating its cold winter discharge reduces performance; recirculating hot summer air harms cooling.
Defrost water and condensate
In heating mode, frost on the outdoor coil is cleared through automatic defrost and water drains below the condenser. On a park-home plot that water must not freeze across steps, a shared path or the underside structure. The base and drain strategy should remain accessible for inspection.
In summer, condensate forms at the indoor unit. Gravity drainage is preferable where practical. A pump may be necessary, but its sound, maintenance and overflow response matter in a compact home.
Electrical supply and site utilities
The installer and electrician should confirm the supply, consumer unit, circuit protection, isolator position and any site-level capacity restriction. Park homes may have supply arrangements that differ from a conventional freehold house. Do not assume a spare-looking circuit can serve the new system without design and testing.
If LPG or electric heating remains for backup or water, the handover should explain which appliances can run together and what happens after a power cut. Wi-Fi control is useful for pre-heating, but a local controller must remain usable when internet access fails.
Site-owner consent and planning
Pitch agreements, park rules and ownership boundaries can control external plant, noise, appearance, penetrations and contractor access. Written site consent is separate from planning permission. Give the site owner the exact model, dimensions, sound data, position, base, pipe route, drainage and working method.
Planning rules vary by UK nation and property circumstances. In England, permitted development for an air-source heat pump depends on satisfying every current condition; a park-home proposal should not assume that rules written for a typical house automatically settle its status. Confirm with the relevant local planning authority where needed.
Hot water and frost resilience
Air-to-air systems normally do not heat tap water. The proposal must retain or replace the existing LPG boiler, immersion cylinder, electric shower or other arrangement. Include its tariff, capacity and freeze protection in the overall decision.
If the home is left unoccupied, define frost-protection settings and remote alerts without relying solely on a cloud app. A power or internet outage can defeat remote assumptions. The owner should know the local reset, backup heat and water-isolation procedure.
Grant position
Current GOV.UK and Ofgem guidance includes £2,500 for qualifying residential air-to-air heat pumps in England and Wales, but eligibility is property- and design-specific. The system must meet current full-space-heating and replacement rules and use an MCS-certified installer. Park-home tenure, ownership, occupancy and technical compliance need confirmation before the contract relies on a voucher.
