Air to air heat pump cost in the UK (2026)

Budget £1,400–£3,200 for one professionally installed wall-mounted split, or £3,500–£8,500 for a multi-split covering several rooms. Energy Saving Trust currently cites about £1,900 for one room and £3,700 for a three-bedroom semi-detached home; the wider bands here allow for access, model and installation differences.

The lower end assumes an easy ground-floor installation with a short pipe run and nearby electrical supply. Scaffolding, a roof or high-wall condenser, long line sets, condensate pumps, upgraded electrics and premium low-noise equipment all move a quote upwards. Whole-home air-to-air heating is a system-design job, not simply a larger bedroom unit.

The £2,500 air to air heat pump grant

Current GOV.UK guidance lists a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps. Ofgem says it applies to residential properties only and that the scheme is open in England and Wales. This is a genuine change from the older scheme, when air-to-air systems were excluded.

Eligibility is narrower than “buy any air conditioner and receive £2,500”. Current Ofgem guidance says the new system must replace an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system, meet the property’s full space-heating needs and satisfy scheme standards; an MCS certified installer applies for and redeems the voucher. A unit proposed only to cool one bedroom is not something to price on the assumption that it will qualify.

Before accepting a grant-adjusted quote

  1. Ask the installer to confirm in writing that the property and proposed design satisfy current BUS eligibility.
  2. Check the installer and system route through MCS; F-Gas certification alone is not the same as BUS eligibility.
  3. Show the full contract price, grant amount and homeowner balance separately.
  4. Do not pay on the promise of a voucher until the installer explains the application and redemption process.

How an air-to-air heat pump works

An outdoor unit absorbs low-temperature heat from outside air. Refrigerant carries that energy through small copper pipes to an indoor unit, where a fan releases it into the room. A compressor raises the refrigerant temperature, which is why useful heat can still be recovered when the outside air feels cold.

Reverse a valve and the same cycle runs backwards: indoor heat is transferred outdoors, leaving the room cooler and drier. That is why “air-to-air heat pump” and “reversible split air conditioning” often describe the same hardware. The buying question is how the system will be designed and used.

Single split, multi-split or ducted?

Single split: one outdoor condenser and one indoor head. It is the simplest and often most efficient answer for a bedroom, loft, garden office or main living area. Separate single splits also preserve independent backup if one system fails.

Multi-split: one outdoor unit serves two to four indoor units. It reduces outdoor clutter, but every connected room shares the condenser’s available capacity. The quote needs to show how simultaneous heating or cooling loads were calculated.

Ducted air-to-air: a concealed indoor unit distributes conditioned air through grilles. It looks cleaner and can serve several spaces, but requires loft, ceiling or service-void space and careful duct design. It makes most sense during a major renovation or new build. Air-to-air vs air-to-water heat pumps

Both move heat efficiently, but they deliver it to different places. Air-to-air warms room air directly and can reverse for summer cooling. Air-to-water supplies a wet central-heating circuit and hot-water cylinder. That difference affects cost, disruption and whether the system can replace a boiler.

Running cost: calculate your own, not a national guess

Multiply the unit’s average electrical input in kilowatts by your electricity price and its running hours. A system drawing 0.8kW at 27p/kWh costs about 22p for an hour at that load. Inverter systems throttle down once a room reaches temperature, so rated maximum input is not the same as a typical seasonal average.

For heating, compare delivered heat rather than electricity alone. At a seasonal COP of 3.5, one 27p unit of electricity delivers roughly 3.5kWh of heat—about 7.7p per delivered kWh before distribution and other losses. Cold weather, defrost cycles, poor sizing and aggressive thermostat settings reduce performance. Planning, noise and installer credentials

In England, many domestic air-source heat pump installations are permitted development only when all limits and conditions are met. Current Planning Portal guidance includes MCS 020a compliance, outdoor-unit volume and siting rules, restrictions for listed buildings and protected locations, and the condition that the system is not used solely for cooling. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own planning frameworks.

Refrigerant work must be completed by an appropriately F-Gas certified person or business. For the £2,500 grant route, the installer also needs the relevant MCS certification. Ask for model-specific indoor and outdoor sound data, proposed locations, condensate routing and maintenance clearance before accepting a quote.

What a strong quote should contain

  • A room-by-room heat-loss and cooling-load assessment, not sizing by floor area alone.
  • Exact indoor and outdoor model numbers, design output at winter conditions, SCOP and sound levels.
  • Indoor-head, condenser, pipe, drain and electrical-isolator locations shown before work starts.
  • All access, scaffold, electrical, condensate-pump and making-good costs itemised.
  • F-Gas credentials, warranty terms, commissioning record and first-service requirements.
  • For grant proposals, written MCS/BUS eligibility and the gross price, voucher and balance separately.

Compare complete designs, not just the headline equipment brand. A cheaper system that leaves closed bedrooms unheated or puts a noisy condenser below a neighbour’s window is not a cheaper solution. How much does an air-to-air heat pump cost in the UK?

A professionally installed single-split air-to-air heat pump typically costs £1,400–£3,200. A multi-split serving several rooms is usually £3,500–£8,500. Can an air-to-air heat pump heat a whole house?

Do I need planning permission for an air-to-air heat pump?

The unit must not be used solely for cooling. Listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and restricted properties need extra care, and rules differ across the UK.

Is air-to-air cheaper to run than electric radiators?

Usually by a wide margin. A resistive heater turns 1kWh of electricity into about 1kWh of heat, while a heat pump can deliver roughly 3–4kWh of heat per 1kWh of electricity in suitable conditions. Actual seasonal performance depends on the model, outdoor temperature, sizing, airflow and set temperature.
