An air-to-air heat pump installation connects one outdoor compressor to one or more indoor fan units, but the valuable part is the design around it: room heat loss, winter output, cooling load, pipe and drain routes, sound, electrical supply, controls and commissioning.
What an installer should solve before drilling
The live UK search results contain manufacturer instructions, national advice, installer pages and questions about cost and DIY. The useful distinction is between mounting equipment and designing a heating system. A cooling-only bedroom split can be selected from a summer heat load; a system expected to heat through winter also needs room-by-room heat-loss calculations and model output at the intended outdoor design temperature.
The survey should establish which rooms must remain comfortable with doors closed. One powerful hallway head is not a substitute for distribution. A whole-home proposal may use separate single splits, one multi-split, several outdoor units or a ducted layout. Each option changes resilience, exterior appearance, simultaneous capacity and price.

Cost increases with scaffold or lifting access, long refrigerant routes, concealed trunking, condensate pumps, distribution-board work, premium low-noise equipment, several core holes, fire stopping and difficult making good. The seven-stage installation process
- Brief. Define whether the priority is winter heating, summer cooling or both, which rooms are occupied and what existing heating will remain.
- Load calculations. Calculate room heat loss and cooling load using fabric, glazing, orientation, ventilation, occupancy and equipment—not floor area alone.
- Layout comparison. Test single, multi-split and ducted arrangements, including simultaneous output, pipe lengths, sound and failure resilience.
- Permissions and credentials. Check planning, lease or freeholder consent, F-Gas responsibility and MCS/BUS eligibility where claimed.
- Fixed design and quote. Record exact model numbers, positions, routes, drains, electrics, access, making good, warranty and total price.
- Installation and testing. Mount equipment, pressure-test, evacuate and connect the refrigerant circuit, complete electrics and prove safe drainage.
- Commissioning and handover. Record test results, demonstrate heat, cool, defrost and timer modes, register warranties and provide maintenance instructions.
Single splits, multi-splits or ducted installation?
Separate single splits use more outdoor positions but preserve independent capacity and partial backup. They can be efficient where rooms sit on different elevations or installation happens in stages. Multi-splits reduce outdoor-unit count and can suit flats or appearance-sensitive properties, but the connected indoor units share one condenser and its simultaneous output.
Ducted air-to-air hides the indoor unit and distributes air through grilles. It can deliver a cleaner whole-home result during renovation, but ceiling or loft space, duct heat loss, fire compartmentation, access and fan pressure all need design. It is not simply a wall split with decorative vents.
Outdoor-unit position, sound and water
The condenser needs clear airflow, secure support, service access and a position that does not transmit vibration into bedrooms or neighbours. Heating mode produces defrost water outdoors; cooling produces condensate indoors. Both flows need an agreed route that will not freeze across a path, stain a façade or rely on an inaccessible pump without an alarm or overflow plan.
In England, reversible air-source heat pumps may be permitted development only where every current condition is satisfied. Property type, outdoor-unit size and number, roof position, protected status, highway relationship, sound assessment and the requirement not to use the unit solely for cooling all matter. F-Gas, MCS and the £2,500 route
Refrigerant installation and service work requires the appropriate F-Gas-qualified person or business. MCS is a separate requirement for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme route. An installer may be qualified to fit a split system without being able to offer an MCS-backed grant design, so ask which business holds each credential.
Current GOV.UK and Ofgem guidance lists £2,500 for qualifying residential air-to-air heat pumps in England and Wales. The MCS-certified installer applies and the proposal must satisfy the live rules, including replacing an eligible fossil-fuel or electric heating system and being sized for the full space-heating requirement. Non-residential air-to-air projects are excluded from this route.

How long does an air-to-air heat pump take to install?
A simple single split is often installed and commissioned in one working day after the survey and permissions are complete. Multi-room, ducted, high-access or electrically complex projects take longer. The installer should give a programme that includes testing, commissioning and handover rather than only equipment mounting.
Can I install an air-to-air heat pump myself?
No ordinary DIY route covers a complete split-system installation. Refrigerant work must be undertaken by appropriately qualified F-Gas personnel. The electrical supply, structural fixing, condensate drainage, planning position, heat-loss design and commissioning also require competent assessment.
Does an air-to-air heat pump installation need radiators?
No. Indoor fan units deliver warm or cool air directly to each served room. That avoids new wet pipework and radiators, but it also means closed rooms need their own indoor head, a designed duct supply or another heat source.
Can installation qualify for the £2,500 grant?
Current GOV.UK and Ofgem guidance includes £2,500 for qualifying residential air-to-air heat pumps in England and Wales. The MCS-certified installer applies, and the system must satisfy current property and technical rules, including replacing eligible existing heating and meeting the full space-heating requirement. A cooling-led single-room addition should not be assumed eligible.
