What moves the duct replacement price
Access. Open basements and stand-up attics are faster than low crawlspaces, truss-packed roofs and finished chases. Access may determine more of the labor bill than material.
Material. Flexible duct is economical and useful when correctly sized, supported and kept reasonably straight. Rigid round or rectangular metal costs more to fabricate and install but can offer durable, low-resistance runs. Fiberglass duct board is another regional option. The design matters more than a blanket claim that one material is always best.
Insulation and climate zone. Ducts outside the conditioned envelope need insulation appropriate to local code and condensation risk. Damaged vapor barriers in humid climates can create wet insulation and ceiling stains even when the metal or liner remains intact.
Supply and return design. Copying a poor layout preserves its comfort problems. Added returns, transfer paths, larger trunks, balancing dampers and revised boots cost money because they solve airflow—not because they are “extras.”
Demolition and finish repair. Clarify whether wall and ceiling openings, drywall, paint, flooring protection, cleanup and disposal are included. An HVAC quote may exclude all finish work.
Hazardous materials and contamination. Older insulation or duct materials may require asbestos testing before disturbance. Flood, sewage, mold or pest damage can require specialist remediation outside an HVAC contractor's scope.
