Prepare the scope before comparing prices

An HVAC estimate only becomes comparable when the equipment and installation scope are clear. Start with home size, climate, insulation, windows, duct condition and the heating system being replaced. Our sizing and cost tools produce planning ranges; the selected contractor should still complete the load calculations required for the actual home.

Ask each bidder to identify model numbers, rated capacity, efficiency, labor, permits, electrical work, controls, commissioning, warranties and exclusions. When duct repairs or indoor-air-quality accessories are proposed, separate those prices from the core equipment replacement so the bids remain understandable.

Compare lifetime cost, not only the payment

Efficiency, fuel choice, maintenance and financing can change the long-term result more than a small difference in equipment price. The SEER2, operating-cost and finance calculators make those assumptions visible. They are most useful when you replace their defaults with your own utility rate, usage and written loan terms.

Published national and local price bands are not contractor quotes. Use them to challenge missing scope and extreme outliers, then rely on a property assessment, current permits and a written contract. Licensing requirements vary by state and municipality, while refrigerant work requires appropriately certified technicians.
