Why garden rooms overheat so easily

A modern garden room can be well insulated and still overheat. Large glazing admits solar energy, dark roofs absorb heat, a compact volume warms quickly and computers or gym equipment add internal load. Insulation slows heat movement; it does not stop sunlight arriving through glass or remove heat already trapped inside.

A fixed split air conditioner moves that heat outdoors. Most current systems can reverse the cycle in winter, making the same equipment an air-to-air heat pump. A simple installation can be one of the most straightforward domestic air-conditioning projects because the indoor and outdoor units may sit on opposite sides of the same wall. For early planning, allow about £1,500–£2,800 for one professionally supplied and installed split system. Treat that as a survey budget, not a guaranteed price.

Price changes with glazing and required capacity, cable distance from the consumer unit, trenching or armoured power, pipe length, drainage, wall construction, outdoor mounting, condensate pumps, Wi-Fi controls and warranty. Confirm whether electrical and making-good work are included.

Size for glass, roof and real occupancy

Record the internal dimensions, roof and wall build-up, glazing area and orientation, shading, doors, number of people, computers, screens, gym equipment and normal hours. A compact high-wall split is usually the best-value answer when there is a clear wall and the airflow will not blow directly at a desk or treatment couch. A floor-mounted console can fit beneath a window or sloping roof and may feel natural in heating mode, but it needs clear low-level space.

Whichever style you choose, keep it away from curtains, shelving and storage. Filters need regular access. Position the controller or temperature sensor where it represents the occupied zone rather than a sunny corner or the stream of supply air.

Noise matters inside and outside

For video calls and concentrated work, compare the indoor sound-pressure figure at the lowest useful fan speed—not only a marketing word such as “silent”. Ask whether display lights can be disabled and whether a condensate pump is proposed. Gravity drainage is normally quieter when the site allows it.

The outdoor condenser should not face a neighbour’s window or sit in a tight acoustic box. Distance alone does not solve tonal noise or vibration. Ask the installer to consider operating mode, mounting, reflections from fences and walls, and the fact that heating mode may run on winter mornings or evenings.

Heating, ventilation and moisture

A reversible split can heat a garden office efficiently, but it normally recirculates indoor air. It does not replace background or purge ventilation for occupants, odours or exercise. Opening windows may be enough for some small rooms; regularly occupied studios, treatment spaces and gyms may need a more deliberate fresh-air approach.

Cooling removes moisture while operating, but an air conditioner is not a cure for penetrating damp, leaks or an unventilated construction. If the room smells musty when unused, investigate the fabric and ventilation before expecting cooling equipment to solve it.

Planning and installation checks

Do not assume that because the garden room exists under permitted development, every external air-conditioning component is automatically covered. Equipment position, boundaries, building dimensions, listed status and local constraints can matter.
