The decibel scale is logarithmic: a portable unit at 50dB isn't "a bit louder" than a split at 20dB — it's hundreds of times the sound energy, sitting in the room with you, next to a window that has to stay open for its exhaust hose. Indoor unit high, not over the bed. Above the door or on a side wall lets cool air mix into the room instead of draughting across your face at 3am. Modern units also have vane settings that sweep airflow away from the bed.
Outdoor unit away from bedroom windows. Yours and the neighbours'. A compact condenser on the rear wall at 40–50dB outside is unnoticeable by day and neighbourly by night.
