Air Conditioner Heat Mode: Warm the Room Properly
Select the right mode, set a sensible temperature and recognise normal winter pauses before assuming the system has failed.

Press MODE until HEAT or a sun symbol appears, set a room temperature above the current temperature, leave the fan on AUTO and point the louvres down into the occupied zone. Allow several minutes for the indoor coil to warm before judging the output.
What heat mode actually does
A reversible fixed air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump. In cooling mode it transfers heat from the room outdoors. In heat mode a reversing valve changes the refrigerant circuit so the outdoor unit collects low-temperature heat and the indoor unit releases it into the room.
This is different from a simple electric fan heater. The system moves heat and can deliver several units of room heat for each unit of electricity in suitable conditions. If several indoor units share one multi-split condenser, they normally need to operate in the same broad mode. One head asking for heat while another asks for cooling can leave a unit waiting or show a mode conflict. Set every active head to HEAT in winter unless the manufacturer supports simultaneous heat recovery.
Set temperature: higher is not faster
Set the temperature you want the room to reach. Choosing 30°C does not normally make an inverter system warm the room faster than a sensible target; it tells the unit to keep working after the comfortable temperature has passed. Start around 18–20°C, allow the room and surfaces to warm, then make small adjustments.
The temperature sensor may be high on the wall inside the indoor unit, where air is warmer than at sofa level. Some controllers use a remote sensor or “follow me” function. If the displayed temperature and occupied-zone comfort differ consistently, ask the installer which sensor controls the system and whether its offset can be configured.
Fan speed and louvre direction
AUTO fan is a sensible starting point because the unit can increase airflow during warm-up and reduce it near set point. Quiet mode can help a bedroom but may restrict available heating output. If a room struggles on the coldest days, test normal AUTO before concluding that the system is undersized.
Warm air rises, so direct the vertical louvre down and across the occupied zone rather than trapping heat at ceiling level. Do not block the intake with a curtain or tall cupboard. In a high room, a low continuous fan or separate ceiling fan can sometimes improve mixing, but it does not replace correct capacity and unit position.
Timers, setbacks and smart controls
Use schedules around occupancy instead of repeatedly driving the room from very cold to very hot. A modest setback can reduce waste without creating a long recovery. For multi-room heating, coordinate schedules so the outdoor unit is not suddenly asked to recover every room at once unless the design allows that load.
Wi-Fi apps are convenient, but preserve the physical remote and learn the local controls. Cloud services, routers and accounts can fail. After a power cut, check whether schedules, time and mode were retained before assuming the heating system has a fault.
Why heat does not start immediately
Many indoor units delay the fan while the coil warms so they do not blow an uncomfortable stream of cold air. The outdoor unit may also wait while valves and pressures settle after a mode change. Several minutes can be normal; rapid button pressing and repeated power cycling can restart the delay.
During defrost the system briefly redirects heat to clear frost from the outdoor coil. The indoor fan may slow or stop, the outdoor fan can pause, vapour may appear and water can drain below the condenser. Normal defrost ends automatically. A solid block of ice that never clears, persistent error code or repeated breaker trip is not a normal pause.
Cold-weather efficiency without folklore
A heat pump can collect energy from outdoor air even below freezing, but capacity and efficiency are model-specific. The right question is not “does it work in winter?” but “what output does this exact model deliver at the design temperature, including defrost behaviour?” That output should have been checked during the installation design.
Keep the outdoor intake and discharge clear of leaves, covers and snow. Do not box the condenser in to make it warmer; recirculating its own cold discharge air usually harms performance. Drainage must allow defrost water to leave safely without creating ice on a path.
Simple efficiency habits
- Close external doors and avoid heating unused rooms to the same temperature.
- Clean user-accessible filters at the interval in the manufacturer instructions.
- Use a stable, comfortable set point rather than alternating between off and maximum.
- Keep indoor and outdoor airflow clear.
- Use normal fan speed when recovering a cold room; select quiet mode after comfort is reached.
- Have a qualified business inspect declining output, leaks, codes or unusual noise.
Air conditioner not heating: safe checks
Confirm HEAT or the sun symbol, set a target above the measured room temperature and make sure every connected multi-split head uses the same mode. Check that filters are clean, airflow is not blocked and the outdoor isolator has not been switched off. Then allow the normal warm-up period.
Stop and seek qualified help for a burning smell, damaged cable, persistent breaker trip, refrigerant concern, heavy ice that does not clear or a fault code that returns after the manufacturer’s permitted reset. Do not open refrigerant covers or repeatedly force a failing compressor to restart. Use the full not-heating fault guide or the urgent repair triage where safety or critical heating is involved.
When the settings reveal a design problem
If the unit produces hot air but the room never reaches a reasonable set point, the issue may be heat loss, distribution or available winter capacity rather than a control fault. Record outdoor temperature, room temperature, set point, fan mode and which other heads were active. That gives the service engineer useful evidence.
A whole-home system should not depend on leaving every internal door open unless that was explicitly part of the design. If closed rooms are consistently cold, review the whole-house distribution requirements before replacing equipment blindly.
