Even air distribution and a discreet finish for offices, shops and open rooms—provided the void, drainage, access and fresh-air strategy are designed before the tiles close.

Choose the airflow pattern around the room

“Cassette” describes the concealed chassis, not one universal air pattern. The right panel depends on room shape, ceiling position, partitions, occupants and obstructions. Blanking outlets after installation can change throw, noise and capacity, so select the unit around the plan rather than forcing a four-way model into a corner.

Confirm whether the price includes ceiling opening and making good, access panels, lifting, condensate pipe and pumps, electrical supplies, controls, roof penetrations, fire stopping, commissioning, decoration and out-of-hours work. A cassette-only equipment price is a poor proxy for the installed project.

Survey the ceiling void before selecting a model

A visible 600mm panel does not mean the whole machine fits inside a 600mm tile. The chassis may extend beyond the grid and needs suspension rods, refrigerant connections, insulation, a drain route, a control box and space to remove filters and components. Beams, lights, sprinklers, cable tray and ventilation ducts compete for the same void.

Open representative tiles and measure the clear depth across the actual position. Check asbestos information before disturbing older ceiling materials. The final reflected ceiling plan should coordinate the cassette with lights, smoke detectors, speakers, sprinklers and access panels rather than leaving trades to resolve clashes on site.

Condensate is the hidden risk

A cassette creates water whenever it cools humid air. Many models have a small lift pump, but it is not permission to route a drain uphill indefinitely. Follow the manufacturer’s lift limit, provide fall after the high point, insulate cold pipework and give the drain a cleanable route.

In offices, retail and hospitality, a blocked drain can damage stock, ceilings and trading space before anyone sees the fault. Specify pump access, high-level alarm or unit shutdown, overflow strategy and a maintenance interval. Gravity drainage is quieter and simpler where the building layout permits it.

Air throw, draughts and room sizing

The heat-load calculation must include glazing, solar gain, occupancy, lighting, computers, kitchen or retail equipment, outside air and operating hours. Then check the selected cassette’s throw at low and normal fan speeds. A unit that reaches the walls only at maximum fan may be uncomfortable and noisy during ordinary use.

Do not position four outlets directly over four rows of desks. Adjustable vanes and occupancy sensing can help, but layout comes first. Large irregular rooms may work better with two smaller cassettes or a ducted system than one powerful central unit.

A cassette is not automatically ventilation

The cassette normally recirculates room air. Cooling an occupied office does not satisfy fresh-air needs or control carbon dioxide by itself. Some equipment offers a fresh-air knockout, but the permitted volume may be small and requires a fan, filtration, tempering and controls designed as a system.

Ask the designer to show the ventilation calculation and identify every supply and extract route. If the existing ceiling ventilation is being altered, air volumes should be recommissioned after the cassette and new partitions are installed.

The quote and handover checklist

Require room-by-room heat loads, model numbers and capacities, panel type, indoor and outdoor positions, measured void depth, suspension details, refrigerant routes, condensate lift and drain path, controls, sound data, fresh-air scope, electrical work, ceiling work, fire stopping, commissioning, warranties and maintenance access.

Commercial handover should include drawings, model and serial schedules, controller instructions, electrical records where applicable, commissioning data, refrigerant information and the maintenance plan. Refrigerant work must follow current F-Gas qualification rules.

How much does ceiling cassette air conditioning cost?

A single compact cassette commonly needs an early budget of about £2,500–£5,000 installed. Larger or premium cassettes, difficult ceiling work, long pipe runs, roof access, electrical upgrades and out-of-hours installation can take one zone to roughly £4,000–£7,000+. Multi-unit projects should be designed and quoted as a complete system.

What is a ceiling cassette air conditioner?

It is a split-system indoor unit recessed into a suspended or purpose-built ceiling. The visible panel usually distributes conditioned air in one, two or four directions while refrigerant pipes connect it to outdoor equipment. The main chassis, drain tray and pump sit above the ceiling and require access.

Does a ceiling cassette bring in fresh air?

Usually not. Most recirculate and heat or cool room air. Some models accept a limited fresh-air connection, but that does not prove the building’s ventilation requirement is met. The designer must calculate outside-air needs separately and coordinate any mechanical ventilation system.

How much ceiling space does a cassette need?

It depends on the model. Compact cassettes may fit a 600mm ceiling grid, but the body, pipe bends, drain fall or pump, electrical box, hangers and service clearance all need space above the tiles. A measured ceiling survey and model-specific drawing are essential before ordering.

Are ceiling cassettes suitable for homes?

They can suit large open-plan rooms, extensions and high-end renovations with a suitable ceiling void. In most ordinary bedrooms a wall-mounted unit is cheaper, quieter and easier to service. Domestic cassettes make most sense when air distribution or interior design justifies the ceiling work.

Do ceiling cassettes need a condensate pump?

Many include a lift pump because the drain tray sits above the ceiling. Gravity drainage remains preferable where the route allows it. Pumps need accessible maintenance, cleanable pipework and an alarm or safe shutdown strategy where an overflow could damage ceilings, stock or electrics.

Can one ceiling cassette cool several rooms?

Not through closed walls. A cassette distributes air within one open zone. Serving separate rooms properly requires multiple indoor units or a ducted system with designed supply and return paths. Leaving doors open is not a substitute for a heat-load and airflow design.
