What "wall-mounted" actually buys you
A wall-mounted split is the standard UK domestic choice because it solves the whole problem at once: real cooling, quiet operation, no lost floor space, no open window and efficient winter heating from the same unit. Single split or multi-split?
Single split — one indoor unit, one outdoor unit. The right answer for "my bedroom is unbearable" or "the home office needs sorting". £1,400–£3,200 installed, one-day job.
Multi-split — two to five indoor units running off one outdoor condenser. The right answer where outdoor wall space is scarce: one condenser instead of several, commonly £3,000–£8,500+ installed. The crossover point: wanting a second room within a year or two usually makes the multi-split cheaper than two separate installs — worth deciding before the first survey, since the outdoor unit gets sized for the plan.
What happens on install day
Indoor unit mounted high on the wall; a 65mm hole drilled through it; two insulated refrigerant pipes, a condensate drain and a cable run to the outdoor unit; the system vacuumed, pressure-tested, charged and commissioned. Refrigerant handling is legally restricted to F-Gas certified engineers — the certification every installer in our network must hold. How much does a wall-mounted air conditioning unit cost installed?
In 2026, £1,400–£3,200 fully installed for a single room, depending on unit size (2.0–5.0kW), brand tier and pipe run. Multi-splits running two to four rooms from one outdoor unit cost £2,800–£8,500. The unit itself is often only a third of the price — the F-Gas certified installation is what you are mostly paying for.
How does a wall-mounted split system work?
Two halves: a slim indoor unit high on the wall exchanges heat with room air, and an outdoor condenser exchanges heat outside. They are connected by refrigerant pipes. Nearly all current fixed splits are reversible heat pumps and can commonly deliver 3–4kWh of heat per 1kWh of electricity in suitable conditions.
Are wall-mounted units better than portable air conditioners?
For any room used regularly, decisively yes: two to three times more efficient, 19–26dB versus 45–55dB of noise, no hot hose out of an open window, and no floor space lost. Portables make sense for renters and one-week heatwaves; wall-mounted is the answer for a home you own.
Do wall-mounted air conditioners heat as well?
Most current fixed wall-mounted splits are reversible air-to-air heat pumps. They can use much less electricity than a plug-in resistance heater for the same delivered room heat. Actual seasonal efficiency depends on the model, outdoor temperature, sizing, airflow and controls.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward single-room install — indoor unit on or near an external wall — is a one-day job: mounting, pipework, electrical connection, vacuum-and-charge, commissioning. Multi-room systems take two to three days. All refrigerant work legally requires an F-Gas certified engineer.
Where can wall-mounted units be installed?
Ideally high on an external wall, or an internal wall with a practical pipe and drain route. The outdoor unit needs clear airflow, sound-conscious siting and safe service access.
